[] The NW Ed Cluster hosted ant Oregon Cluster Network Meeting on Jan 23rd

Update to the December Oregon Leadership Summit.

The NW Ed Cluster hosted a breakout sesson at the Leadership Summit. The session provided participants with a better picture of Oregon’s current Education Technology Industry and how local companies are thriving in today’s environment.

Moderator:

Jim Snyder, Director, NW Ed Cluster
Speakers:
Candace Peterson, President, Learning.com
Matt Chapman, President and CEO, NW Evaluation Association
Deme Clainos, CEO, StudyDog

As a summary the highlights of the breakout session were:

1. Improve the business climate for Oregon companies to motivate them to remain in Oregon
2. Make more capital available for Oregon educational start-up companies
3. Increase school budgets for computer-based instruction so they will be more productive by purchasing curriculum computer programs hence purchasing more Oregon companies products
4. Allow for the application of a growth measure (not tied to a grade level) to be included in the NCLB waiver that Oregon is requesting from the Feds.

The cluster also has a webpage on the Oregon Business Plan website.  Check it out.

We just released a new "Social Impact Study" of the cluster.  This was a year long effort by Nick Feulner to poll some of the core members of the cluster to identify core values of the cluster and its potential future direction. In addition, this study addressed the potential impact that the cluster has on the surrounding community. We are very excited about this ground breaking information

Email Jim Snyder to get on the mailing list and to get the study

Some open discussion questions for the Cluster:

* What are the biggest challenges are cluster firms facing operating an education business here in Oregon in the next 12 months?

* What makes Oregon (and/or Portland ) an attractive place for your business?

* What could make Portland even better for firms in the education industry?

* What additional companies and services would you wish to attract to Portland ?

* What can local and state governments do to help drive economic development of the educational industries in the next 12 months?

Please email me to join the cluster!

Since August 2003, the NW Education Cluster has existed to discuss issues surrounding education in the Northwest.
